Port of San Francisco (Port)

The Port of San Francisco (Port) manages 7.5 miles of waterfront that are held in “public trust” for the people of California. The Port is a public enterprise committed to promoting a balance of maritime, recreational, industrial, transportation, public access, and commercial activities on a self-supporting basis through the appropriate management and development of the waterfront for the benefit of the public. The Port is involved in a wide range of businesses including cargo shipping, ship repair, excursion boating, ferry transportation, commercial real estate, fishing, fish processing/distribution, tourism, filming, harbor services and passenger cruises. The Port has over 200 employees including the Engineering Department’s 26 full time positions.

Engineering provides project and construction management, engineering design, facility inspection, contracting, code compliance review and permitting services for all of the Port’s facilities including piers, structures, buildings, cranes, utilities, public and private development projects, streets and walkways. Engineering has civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical engineers, building and construction inspectors, plan checkers and project managers. Engineering’s mission is to actively participate, contribute and support the Port’s commitment to public health and safety, public interest, public waterfront use, maritime activities and maximizing Port revenues in concert with other Port Departments, particularly Real Estate, Maritime, Planning and Maintenance. Engineering assists and coordinates with other City Departments to assure a seamless transition between the City and the 7.5 miles of waterfront real estate in the Port’s jurisdiction.
