www.sfwater.org

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), a department of the City and County of San Francisco, provides retail drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco, wholesale water to three Bay Area counties, and green hydroelectric and solar power to San Francisco's municipal departments.

We are comprised of three essential 24/7 service utilities: Water, Wastewater and Power. These functions are supported by the Business Services, Infrastructure and External Affairs.

Headquartered at 525 Golden Gate Ave. in San Francisco, we have about 2,300 employees working in seven counties with a combined annual operating budget of over $700 million.

Our mission is to provide our customers with high quality, efficient and reliable water, power, and sewer services in a manner that is inclusive of environmental and community interests, and that sustains the resources entrusted to our care.

The SFPUC’s Infrastructure Division is responsible for implementing the $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP), the largest single capital improvement project in San Francisco history and one of the largest under implementation on the West Coast, the Sewer System Improvement Program, and other SFPUC capital programs and projects.

SFPUC’s Infrastructure Division is dedicated to delivering high quality capital projects. Engineers of all levels are integrated within the four Bureaus of the Division under the direction of the Assistant General Manager, Infrastructure:

The types of capital projects undertaken by the Infrastructure Division include design and construction of new facilities and retrofitting and rehabilitation of existing facilities such as: tunnels, dams; bridges; buildings; water and wastewater treatment facilities; pump stations; reservoirs and pipelines.

The Infrastructure Division needs Engineers for Project Management, Engineering Management (Design), Construction Management (Construction Inspectors), and Technical support to complete these projects. Engineers are needed in all engineering disciplines including civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and environmental engineering. Opportunity for development and advancement for motivated and goods oriented employees are excellent.

Business Enterprises

The SFPUC operates three separate business enterprises: Water, Power, and Wastewater and Water. Engineers are also needed at each of these business enterprises operations centers.

Water

Power Enterprise is the energy utility for San Francisco's municipal facilities. This enterprise uses the Hetch Hetchy hydroelectric power operation in the Sierra Nevada to power street lights, traffic lights, trolley buses, San Francisco General Hospital and health clinics, fire and police stations and other services, as well as the San Francisco International Airport.

This enterprise manages power policy, energy services, energy efficiency, and development and construction of energy generation resources, with emphasis on renewable sources such as solar power.

Wastewater

Wastewater Enterprise is responsible for protecting public heath and safety through the collection and treatment of wastewater. More than 80 million gallons of wastewater are collected every day in a 900 mile combined sewer system, and transported to treatment plants where pollutants are removed before release into San Francisco Bay.

In 2006, the enterprise will launch the Wastewater Master Plan to ensure the wastewater system's safety and reliability.
